Welcome !

Welcome to Pretty Good Consulting !

I am volunteering with CHRA, the Denver SHRM chapter, as the Director of Workforce Readiness. It’s an issue that has been close to my heart for many years. We are well into our second year of our Workforce Readiness Project. We are working with 7 partner community benefit organizations in an effort to leverage the skills and volunteer spirit of our 1000 local CHRA members.

One of the issues where we are trying to move the needle is in the re-entry into the workforce for people with criminal records. Unless you have some experience in this area, it would be hard for you to believe how difficult we make it for people trying to straighten their lives out. Human Resource Managers are quite skilled at blocking these candidates from jobs that they are perfectly qualified to perform. As a matter of fact, I’m speaking this month to an assemblage of Job Corps managers who are concerned with how best to get their young charges to understand the risks of drug and alcohol use on their work opportunities as well as the larger risks of having any criminal record.

I welcome the EEOC’s recent updates on the use of criminal background checks. I would be heartily in favor of “Ban the Box” legislation here in Colorado so that we might push the HR community to truly give these applicant a fair shake via an individualized assessment of their suitability.

And, of course, I’d be delighted to be able to talk with you about any Performance Improvement or HR Strategy Development needs that you might have.

Give me a call or send an email.
Sincerely,
Jim
